Ear Piercings as Acupuncture Therapy

I recently read an article about using ear piercings as acupuncture therapy.  Did you know that the ear harbours around 300 acupressure points that are all connected to an organ or specific emotional expression?

That means most piercings are located in places that correlate to acupuncture points on the body’s meridians of energy.

Much like the foot in reflexology, some acupuncturists use the ear as a road map for the rest of the body and activate these points to remedy specific imbalances throughout the body.

As with both acupuncture and auriculotherapy, a piercing can be placed in a specific spot to stimulate the reflex points in that area. Doing this can improve the flow of energy within the body, which can help alleviate a certain pain and regulate the body’s functions and internal organs. Most of the pressure points known to allay pain can be found in the ear. Acupuncturists often call the ear a “microsystem” because there is a point for every part of the body.

PICK YOUR POINTS. If you’re curious about the link between your piercings and their acupuncture points, here’s a place to start. If you’re thinking of getting pierced, you may want to consider the potential connection between your piercing and their related acupuncture pressure points:

LOWER LOBE – ANXIETY

UPPER LOBE – DEPRESSION

ROOK – STRESS

HELIX – INSOMNIA

DAITH – MIGRAINES

CONCH – CHRONIC PAIN

INDUSTRIAL – ALLERGIES

FUN FACT - Why did Pirates wear Gold Hoops?

Interestingly, the alleged main reason that pirates wore a golden earring – often hooped – was because they believed it improved their eyesight. Without any science behind this rumour, the widely held belief among the pirate community was that the precious metals forming the earring had magic powers to heal their vision!

However, a more science-based explanation for how an earring can improve your vision is acupuncture. Of course, this depends on your attitude towards acupuncture, as there certainly are some sceptics out there, but some people say that there is an acupuncture point on the ear lobe that can improve your vision.
